A beautiful warm and sunny day in Civic Center Park for the Occupy May Day celebration. Partly a "Be-In" and partly a "Protest" and "Teach-In" - this was mostly a groovy gathering of organizations and like minded people from all strata of society. The Occupy movement had called for a general strike on May Day to point out the importance of the 99% - the workers who make it work - and many were obviously heeding the call.
The numbers varied throughout the day with as many as 500-100 participating over the first couple of hours (that we were there) including office workers and tourists happening by due to the warm temperatures and peaceful ambiance.
Booths included the IWW (International Workers of the World), "Food Not Bombs" (which provided free food), The Colorado Anti-Violence Campaign", The Colorado Progressive Coalition, The Catholic Worker Movement as well as Occupy Denver. Also present were various unions and their members.
One of the main themes was - This was a No Money Day - and everything was free. Of course in joining with the International Labor Day - the workers of the world were celebrated as well as the rites of spring.
The Greek Theater Stage had a full schedule from 12 Noon to 8PM including - the rally at Noon and the march which started at 1 and wound its way up 14th Street to Grant and around the Denver Art Museum before proceeding down Broadway to the 16th street Mall stopping at the Federal Reserve and then back. Then - music, poetry, speeches, circles, discussions, panels, performance art and plenty of fun.
Enjoy the photos!
