General Assembly in Civic Center Park: A very cold day in the park. Some snow. A big circle. Participatory democracy in action. A short explanation of hand signals that help keep the discourse civil and concentrated. Then on to the issues brought forward prior to the meeting. Most impressive - the love and clarity of the participants.

Description of Meeting from
occupydenver.org website:

"As we begin the New Year, the Occupy sites all over the country and the globe are shifting and evolving. For the Occupy movement, this year is full of promise and potential for amazing things. Occupy Denver would like to use the first Saturday of 2012 to hold a General Assembly Open Forum to give Denver a chance to discuss our vision for this momentous year.

The following are the "Notes" taken on the meeting by a volunteer:

ANNOUCEMENTS

1. Confiscated articles from the December 20th eviction have been reclaimed and are available from Move-on contact to owners.

2. Littleton group is trying to feed all 24/7 occupiers a hot meal every day. They have one day covered need help with rest of week. They figured that between 17$ and 18$ they can feed between 20-25 people. They are also having a Knit-in to make scarves, hats and gloves for 24/7 occupiers.

3. Tactics are looking for volunteers to be part of a phone tree during evictions so that belongings can be salvaged and saved,

6 Topics for Discussion

I: MODIFY THE CONSTITUTION

Wealth disparity common, rich use to constitution to stay rich, need reform that no longer supports the wealthy.

Reform of Electoral College.

Article V. of the constitution states method for reform & modifying the Constitution see below(from Expedia):

Article Five of the United States Constitution describes the process whereby the Constitution may be altered.

Altering the Constitution consists of proposing an amendment or amendments and subsequent ratification.
Amendments may be proposed by either two-thirds of both houses of the United States Congress or by a national convention. This convention can be assembled at the request of the legislatures of at least two-thirds of the several states. To become part of the Constitution, amendments must then be ratified either by approval of the legislatures of three-fourths of the states or ratifying conventions held in three-fourths of the states. Congress has discretion as to which method of ratification should be used. Any amendment so ratified becomes a valid part of the constitution, provided that no state "shall be deprived of its equal Suffrage in the senate," without its consent.

Discussion Reform of Electoral College difficult should have more doable goals

1. Individual rights enable one to be more prosperous therefore

2. Get rid of corporate personhood

3. Courts need to respect individual rights

4. Discussion about State of Montana overthrowing the Citizens United act. The reason this could happen was that Montana had laws already on the books that corporations were not people and that money is not free speech. Was a State versus Federal case. Colorado needs to get similar law passed

5. Need to turn power over to 99%

6. A Veterans spoke and said that need to respect constitution

7. Change comes from within and start from the bottom up

8. Citizens United vs. FEC

9. History of Corporation in U.S. a corporation is described as a person.

10. Legal definition of a person is a shell that holds rights needs to be determined more clearly that that rights are

11. Need to have realistic goals

II:OCCUPY DENVER NEEDS TO BECOME MORE POLITICALLY INVOLVED DAN

Elect people who support Occupy and 99%

Elizabeth Warren in Massachusetts is a supporter of the 99% and Occupy

Discussion OCCUPY DENVER NEEDS TO BECOME MORE POLITICALLY INVOLVED

1. Occupy needs to be suspicious of politicians courting votes and elected officials

2. Use a tested model - do not beg for answers

3. Nationwide movement to support each other

4. Share ideas for the future

5. Mike check and general assembly is a laboratory for the future

6. Need to bring together people that are disenfranchised

7. Change from within will lead to failure

8. No leaders either good/bad

9. Find a way into the system use the model of tea party each vote counted and that got a voice

10. Do not want Occupy to become co-opted

11. Elected officials uphold the constitution - like the sheriff in some places they are elected but in Denver they are appointed as in the manager of safety

12. Use of rhetoric can be used against us, be careful and avoid violence as in the Arab Spring. Officials support Arab Spring but not Occupy.

III: GETTING STORIES OUT

Mainstream media report a mountain of lies. Each of us has a story. Get your story out any way possible. Spread the news of 99%.

Discussion GETTING STORIES OUT

1. www.wearethe99%.org to post stories

2. outreach wants to put a human face video for the media. Interviews needed contact outreach@occupydenver .org

3. Occupy Denver has a forum on website where you can post stories check website

IV: ELECTORAL REFORM

General Focus on electoral reform a very topical subject and one worth pursuing.

Discussion ELECTORAL REFORM

1. www.getmoneyout.org needs 5000,000 signature so sign up power to the people

2. What is Occupy Denver doing about Electoral reform

3. Fighting Citizens United Act

V: RELATIONSHPS TO CIVIC CENTER PARK

Many uses for the park, MLK, Gay Pride, Cinque De Mayo etc. Occupy needs to meld with other groups and gathering to offer and gain support.

1. Concern about assimilating into other groups

2. Share our ideas

3. Listen to 99%

4. Need to manage out image better when with other groups

5. Feature in the MLK parade

6. Outreach working with other groups

7. Join with them

8. Any connection one has to other groups. Work with them.

VI: SPACE Issue Chad

Need to find spaces that we can count on to teach, show video if you have any info on this contact outreach@occupydenver.org
