Time for Plan B

This is quite a pickle we’ve got ourselves into. The war in Ukraine is more than absurd – it is a sin against the planet. Old Thinking by Old Men Lacking Vision. Here we are with the information that the planet is teetering on the brink of climate devastation and maybe beyond a point of no return unless urgent measures are taken. And at the same time – war is happening – not just killing human beings but adding to the injury to Mother Earth. Plus, there is the threat of nuclear weapons being on “stand by”. What does that mean “stand by”? It certainly does not mean stand down or stand away or “Stand by Me”.

Madness. This what it means. Self-destruction. The end of humanity as we know it?

How did we get here? Is it all part of some divine plan? I don’t think so.

It seems like this current situation leads back to WWII and the aftermath of the Cold War. The Russians as the bad guys and the West as the good guys. But something about that never rang true. After all – the Russians, US allies, turned the tide against Germany and did quite a lot toward winning that war. And perhaps pertinent, Ukraine had some powerful support to Nazi Germany back then. Russians have some long memories dating back to that war, especially about the 20 million or more who died there.

But the Cold War really soured the situation for everyone growing up in the aftermath. One might look to the current movie about Lucille Ball and Desi Arnez to see that the threat of linking with communism almost destroyed the most popular show on television in the 1950's.

Jump forward the 1960’s and President John F Kennedy. There is ample data that JFK wanted peace and tried to end the cold war including a nuclear disarmament treaty with the Soviet Union. That did not end well for him.

One more thing in the 60’s – the Counter Culture – The Love or “Hippy Movement”. This one had different forms – one being political and the other social. It is the social part that perhaps had the most impact. Yes, it was about Love and Peace and getting along while breaking down all barriers race, class, sex, economics. And through this new thinking, the aim was to create a better world. Alas, it was mostly crushed by the media, by the guardians of the society, by the absence of economic support. But of course, remnants survived even today.

Plan B

The thing to realize is that this counter culture was right!
It is about Peace and Love and all living together in harmony.

And JFK was right, too. It is about nuclear disarmament.
And yes, there is enough on the planet to go around. Bucky Fuller proved that over 40 years ago. But maybe we have to do with a little less so everyone has the basics.

But wouldn’t that be OK to have a better world?

Wouldn’t that be grand!

The Peace symbol is a super-imposition of the semaphore signals for the letters "N" and "D", taken to stand for "nuclear disarmament". (Wikipedia)
